  • Have Ears to Hear

    “But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.”

    Matthew 13:16

    Most people ignore the Word of God. We know the latest scores of sporting events, the latest movies that are out, the most recent headlines, popular shorts to be watched, and so many more irrelevant issues of the day. Yet we neglect to know the true life changing Word of God. Not only does it teach us about Jesus, the only way to heaven, but the Bible is to guide Christians’ every day lives. Many have memorized the following verse: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). However, do many Christians actually do this?

    Remembering that the Bible is all about Jesus, a Christian cannot live a Christ-like life without setting one’s heart upon knowing the Word of God – for it will reveal Jesus to us. “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). Glory means “the recognition belonging to a person, honor, renown. God’s glory made itself manifest in and through Jesus Christ (see John 1:14, 2 Corinthians 4:6).” Knowing Jesus reveals the glory of God. As you read through the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), you will often find that the people glorified God when they saw Jesus’ miracles (see Matthew 15:31). To know God and His glory, one must know Jesus and His Word. Remember what Jesus told his disciples. “And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me” (Luke 24:44). Because all of the Bible teaches of Jesus, Christians must know the Bible and what it says if we are to know Christ better.

    Understanding these things, Believers are to take time to read God’s Word. As we read, hearing from God, we must understand what it is we are hearing from God. “Who hath ears to hear, let him hear” (Matthew 13:9). It is then we begin to study and truly understand the Bible. Read what Jesus said about those who understand God’s Word. “But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear” (Matthew 13:16).

    After reading and beginning to understand God’s Word, Christians must ponder upon the Word of God. The word ponder means “to think deeply, carefully, and for a long time about something, often when trying to make a hard choice or understand a complex idea.” As we ponder upon God’s Word, we begin to have His Word in our hearts. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11). Heart means “the totality of man’s inner or immaterial nature… These are the deepest, innermost feelings.” When God’s Word is in our hearts, we can adhere to its’ teachings. “21. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.22. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23. Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him” (John 14:21-23). It is important to keep (obey) God’s Word. It is then a Believer can have a relationship with Jesus. “14.Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15.Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you” John 15:14-15). We become Jesus’ friends.

    Once one reads God’s Word, hears from God, and ponders upon it, Believers are then able to implement the principles found into our lives. It is at that point we become more like Jesus. Then one can understand the plan and purpose God has for that life. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). It is a process. Keep in mind that many followed Jesus while He walked on this earth. The crowds pressed upon Him often. The disciples followed Him. Yet remember what Jesus told them. “24. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.25. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 16:24-25). It is then that one can truly know Him.

    Finally, Believers are to get busy. Remember how the writer of Hebrews prayed for the Believers before the book closed. “20. Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21. Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen” (Hebrews 13:20-21).

    Have you recognized the importance of Christians knowing and understanding God’s Word, which prepares us to know and walk with Jesus?

  • Real Meditation

    “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments”
    Ezra 7:10

    Today, not many people take time to study the Old Testament Scriptures. They are old, you know! It is all in the past. Who needs to know what happened hundreds of years ago? However, there are so many examples of people in the Old Testament who reveal to us the importance of not only what those words say, but also understanding how to implement the principles found within to each Christian’s life.

    Read what God told Joshua when He made Joshua the new leader of His people: “7. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. 8. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success” (Joshua 1:7-8). To meditate means “to ponder, to study; to speak and talk about.” We can read that there are several times Joshua not only read God’s Word, but he wrote it down, and even read it to God’s people. We can understand from this, that knowing God’s Word was very important to him. God told Joshua to be strong and very courageous. Sometimes it is hard to choose to do the right thing according to God’s Word. But God also told him to not turn from the right hand or to the left – encouraging Joshua to stay straight on in the Word of God. When Joshua did this, his way would be prosperous and he would have good success. When reading about Joshua’s life, he not only had a prosperous life but great success in accomplishing the things God had for him (remember he led God’s people into the Promised Land).

    The urgency of Christians today should be to prepare our hearts to seek and know God’s Word. With that preparation of the heart comes a necessity to obey and live out God’s Word in our lives. Once we begin to accomplish this in our life, we become a light in this world revealing Jesus in our lives. It is then that it becomes much easier to tell others about Jesus. That is exactly what Ezra 7:10 tells us we should do: “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments”

    Philip, who had grown up learning the Law and the Prophets that make up the Old Testament, recognized Jesus when he met him. He immediately found Nathanael and told him that he had found the one the Old Testament said would come: Jesus. “Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph” (John 1:45).

    Paul preached Jesus to the people from the Old Testament (the Law and Prophets). “And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening” (Acts 28:23).

    Can you see the importance of knowing and understanding the Old Testament? It is all about Jesus.

    Read what the wisest man, King Solomon, wrote for us to read. “13. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14).

    Have you taken time to meditate upon (“ponder: study”) the Old Testament?

    Do you understand it prepares our hearts to receive Jesus?

  • Ponder thy Path

    “Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. 27. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.”
    (Proverbs 4:26-27)

    Solomon was a very wise man. When King Solomon asked God to give him an understanding heart to judge God’s people, God gave him great wisdom. “Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.” (1 Kings 3:12). Notice that God said there was no one wiser before or after King Solomon. He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs were a thousand and five (see 1 Kings 4:32). Although King Solomon did many foolish things in his kingdom, he recorded many wise words that are relevant even today.

    The book of Proverbs tells us some of wise words from King Solomon. Note that this book is for anyone who wants to know wisdom and instruction that Solomon learned from God (Proverbs 1:2). The introduction to this book is amazing! (See Proverbs 1:1-6.) It very plainly tells of its importance. However, it also tells the response from God to those who reject these words of wisdom. When the rejection of God’s Word is played out in one’s life and calamity comes, God will not be there to help (see Proverbs 1:20-27). Worse yet, God said, “Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me” (Proverbs 1:28). What a truly scary thought! Compare this to another Proverb recorded. “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me” (Proverbs 8:17). Can you see the difference?

    Why would God respond in such a way? Continue reading, “29. For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30. They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices” (Proverbs 1:29-31). Now do you see whose fault it is? Trouble that comes into one’s life for hating God’s knowledge and His counsel is always the fault of the one who chooses to disregard God’s Word. We should never choose our path in life over what God wants for our life. Chapter 1 ends with an encouraging word to help one understand this. “But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil” (Proverbs 1:33). What comforting words! Hearing from and listening to God is most important. After we learn to do that, we know what to do and where to go, and we will dwell safely. This is what one must consider as we read another Proverb King Solomon recorded for our instruction. “Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. 27. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil” (Proverbs 4:26-27). Walk straight in the path God has placed before you, not turning to the right nor to the left.

    Jesus later told the people, “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:14). Only God’s Word can lead you to life. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (see John 14:6).
