  • Lesson 13: Luke and John: A Man, but God’s Son

    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

    John 3:16

    Key Verse Thought: Read the Key Verse. Many people may be able to quote this verse. Although though this verse is very familiar, we are to understand it in a new light as we study this lesson. The word so means “in this way; in this manner.” This helps us to understand that God really did love the people He created in this world. He revealed that love by giving His only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross, which paid the debt owed because of sin. He did this for whosoever would believe because He did not want anyone to perish. God wants all of His creation to have eternal life with Him. However, God allows each person to choose – to believe in God’s Son, Jesus, or to choose not to believe.

    Emphasis: We are to understand that Jesus was born as a man, but He was God come in the flesh – for He was God’s Son. Jesus came into the world to reveal God to man. Each of the writers of the four Gospels understood this, and they were eyewitnesses of this. Each of these men wrote to specific audiences as a witness to anyone who would believe. We, too, should find someone we can tell about Jesus and become a witness to them telling them of Jesus.

    Lesson Summary: In our last lesson, we learned about two of the Gospel writers: Matthew and Mark. They wrote to specific audiences as a witness for Jesus. They each presented Jesus in a different light: Matthew presented Jesus as the King, and Mark presented Jesus as a Servant. But each of them wanted people to understand who Jesus was and why He had come.

    In this lesson, we continue with the last two Gospel writers: Luke and John. They, too, wrote to specific audiences. Luke was a Greek physician, and he wrote collected evidence declaring of a certainty that Jesus was a Man. He recorded Jesus’ lineage back to the first man, Adam, and then to God. This letter was addressed to a specific friend, Theophilus, and Luke wrote of the availability of the gospel to anyone – not just to the Jews.

    The book of John was written many years after the other three Gospels. John wanted people to understand just who Jesus is. He presented Jesus as God’s Son. It was written to anyone who would believe and receive Jesus as his or her personal Savior. In the book of John, Jesus declared He was “I Am”, whom the people were to recognize was God’s name in the Old Testament. John also told of seven particular witnesses who declared “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.”

    As we complete our study of the witnesses who wrote the four Gospels, we are to recognize something. Just as they had a specific audience to whom they wanted to tell about Jesus, we are to pray and ask God who he wants us to tell about Jesus. Remember that we, too, are to be witnesses for Jesus in the world today.

  • Lesson 13: Remembering the Old Testament

    Key Verse

    Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,

    —Psalm 40:7

    Key Verse Thought: Read the Key Verse. We are to recognize that this verse is referring to Jesus who was to come. That is what the “volume of the book” is written about – Jesus. From the beginning all of the way through the Bible, we are to recognize that it is all and completely about Jesus. Remember that God promised immediately after man sinned, that Jesus would come (see Genesis 3:15). Throughout the Old Testament, God continued to remind His people – until Jesus was born on earth in the New Testament timeframe. That is why we are studying the Bible through from beginning to the end. It will be then that we can recognize that it was Jesus who was to come – for in the volume of the book (the Bible) it is written of Him.

    Emphasis: Through this study, we are to recognize that the Bible is about Jesus from beginning to end. In addition, we are to understand that the Bible teaches that we must know Jesus, and we are to obey God’s Word.

    Lesson Summary: This lesson is an opportune time to review what we have learned about the Old Testament. Use the following pages (and the charts in the front of your book) to remember what each book is about, and its’ placement in history. Be encouraged to recall as much information as possible. Most importantly, make sure you understand the flow of the history. As we learned of the failure of God’s people, be sure you understand that it was to help reveal the great need for Jesus. That is what the whole Bible is about: the need of a perfect propitiation for sinful man, which could only be met in Jesus – promised from Genesis 3:15. We today, are to recognize the need to have Jesus in our heart, believe in Him, and then obey God’s Word.    

    Remember that all of the Personal Books, Major Prophets, and Minor Prophets took place in the books of Genesis through Esther. We have tried to study them in historical order to understand the Old Testament even better. Once again, hold the Old Testament books from Genesis through Esther, helping you understand that all of the rest of the books left in the Old Testament take place within that group (timeframe).

  • Lesson 13: Jesus in the Old Testament Jesus and the Cross

    Key Verse

    For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

    —1 Corinthians 1:18

    Key Verse Thought: Read the Key Verse. Use the following definitions to help you understand the key verse:

    • preaching means to speak intelligently about the word of the cross 
    • cross means the whole passion of Christ and the merit of His sufferings and death 
    • them that perish means exposed to eternal death 
    • foolishness means foolishness or absurdity
    • saved means those who have obtained salvation through Christ and are kept by Him 
    • power means a person in whom the power of God is manifested  

    In this lesson, we will see the “power of God” revealed as we look at the promise of Jesus found in Isaiah chapter fifty-three.

    Emphasis: We are to recognize what Jesus did upon the cross for our sins, believe it, and then tell others what Jesus did for us and will do for them.

    Lesson Summary: In this lesson, we begin with a couple of people in the New Testament who had walked and talked with Jesus, yet did not recognize Him after his resurrection – until He revealed Himself to them. We are to understand that they too, had a hard time understanding Jesus’ death. 

    As we look back at Isaiah chapters fifty-two through fifty-three, we will understand the promise of Jesus that God gave to His people. We will compare those promises made in the Old Testament that Isaiah recorded with the truths revealed in the New Testament (we will only see a few in the New Testament – for there are so many!). As we read them, we too, are to understand just what Jesus had to do upon the cross because of mankind’s sin. When Jesus died upon the cross, God made salvation available to the entire world (not just the Israelites). 

    We will learn that it is a choice that each person must make for himself or herself – whether or not to trust Jesus to take away our sin.  Once we understand why Jesus died upon the cross, we are to believe in Him. Then we are to share these truths to the entire world, so that they too, can know just what Jesus did for them upon the cross.

  • Lesson 13: Jesus in the Old Testament The Last Adam

    Key Verse

    Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

    —1 Peter 2:10

    Key Verse Thought: Read the key verse. As we began our study of the Southern Kingdom, Judah, we learned that they had very few good kings. Although the good kings sought to please God, they, too, failed. The kingdom did not live up to the plan God had for them. Nevertheless, we will learn today that God had a better plan for His people – to be His people. It was not in obedience to the Law (as they thought), but by His mercy. Mercy means “God’s pity for man in his sin, and which reveals itself in God’s will for man’s salvation.” Today we will see God’s plan was for them to believe in His Son, Jesus. We will also understand that plan was not only for the Israelites, but also for all of mankind.

    Emphasis: We are to recognize that just as one man, Adam, brought sin into the world, God sent One, Jesus, to set us free from that sin – free to have eternal life with Him, if we only believe.

    Lesson Summary: In this quarter, we have studied the books of the Kings and Chronicles, learning about the scriptures from Adam until King Hezekiah of the kingdom of Judah. We know God created Adam and that Adam sinned, bringing sin upon every man. With that sin came separation from God. However, at the same time, God gave man a promise that He would send one to restore that broken relationship. 

    We then remember Abraham, and the promise God gave him – the promise of a son through whom all of the world would be blessed (the promise of Jesus). Abraham lived by faith, looking forward to Jesus. He believed the promise God gave, and Abraham was called the friend of God. We are to have the faith of Abraham.

    After Moses led the people out of bondage in Egypt, God gave Moses the Law. Without the Law, mankind did not know how sinful they were, or how far they were from God. In that Law, sin was revealed. They also learned that with obedience comes blessing, but with disobedience comes a curse.

    As we remembered the kings of Judah, we saw how few good kings there were. We could recognize good kings, for they sought to obey God’s Laws. Nevertheless, at some point, they all failed. It was then that the sin was even worse in the land. After learning of the kings, we learned that it is impossible to obey all of God’s Laws – for people are sinners.   

    In this lesson, we will learn that, “21. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive …” (1 Corinthians 15:21-22).

  • Lesson 13: Jesus in the Old Testament Why Israel Needed Jesus

    Key Verse

    Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 

    —2 Timothy 3:5

    Key Verse Thought: Read today’s key verse. You may understand it better with the following definitions:

    • form: the process or activity of forming or shaping; specifically in reference to the Law as the source of knowledge and truth. This refers to the godliness, which is only a form and an external appearance.  Such godliness is a sham and devoid of any real power to break the power of sin. 
    • power: true nature of something as opposed to just talking about something.

    From this verse, we can understand that just because someone acts like they are “godly” does not actually make them godly if they do not have Jesus in their heart. For someone to act “godly” and not have Jesus, is someone who has denied the power (true nature of something) of Jesus in one’s life.  It may look and sound real, but it is not. We read in our key verse that we are to “turn away” from someone, or even things, like that.

    Emphasis: We are to know that it does not matter what anyone thinks, only what God’s Word says: Jesus was the one promised from the beginning of time — the only one who could restore our relationship with God.

    Lesson Summary: We have been studying the history of the Northern Kingdom, Israel. We found they never had a good king. Each king followed in the steps of King Jeroboam I, for we read the kings “took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin” (2 Kings 10:31). Because each king led the nation to continue in the worship of idols (remember the golden calves at Dan and Bethel), the nation never was what God intended it to be. We also studied the prophets Amos and Hosea as they warned Israel to seek God and correct their worship.

    In this lesson, we will see why Israel needed Jesus. As we have learned, Israel had the form of worship (a religion) without the power (true nature) of that worship of God (remember today’s memory verse). They still performed sacrifices, but they were to idols — not to God. Those sacrifices were to remind them of their sin, and that God would send One to remove that sin. Without the correct worship, they would never seek for their Messiah (which was Jesus).  

    We will remember many times God promised for their Messiah (which was Jesus) to come, if only the people had remembered to watch for Him. We will then look at the revealing of Jesus as the Promised One who would take away man’s sin. Even in Jesus’ day, the people misunderstood who he was, so Jesus told them to remember the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah was a witness to a lost city, Nineveh, Jesus was a witness to an evil generation.
