If one does not know the truth about God, those wrong ideas will ultimately lead them further than ever knowing God. The understanding of God and one’s relationship with Him are the deciding factors of what we think about everything else. Remember: God does not change. “For I am the LORD, I change not …” (Malachi 3:6a). Therefore, it would be good to find out some specific things about who God is, and what He expects of us.

David understood. Remember what God tells us about David. “And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will” (Acts 13:22). David knew God, and he understood what God expected of him. God declared that David would fulfill all His will.

David wrote Psalm 139 revealing the greatness of God’s character through his experience with God. David wanted us understand what he had learned. After reading Psalm 139, consider the following.

Psalm 139:1-6: (God is omniscient: God has infinite awareness and insight; understanding; and complete knowledge of all things.) God knew everything about David. God searched David and knew him “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me” (Psalm 139:1). Searched means “examine with pain and care, thoroughly – like searching for a hidden treasure” (see Palm 139:1). God knew what David could be, and David became a great king who loved God. “Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me” (Psalm 139:5). Beset means “to guard a valuable object.” David recognized that God was protecting him, for he was valuable to God.

Psalm 139:7-12: (God is omnipresent: God is in all places at all times.) God was with David. Even if David wanted, he could not hide from God. God sees all. Jeremiah, too, reminded us of this. “Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 23:24). Remember Jonah. He ran from God and hid in the bottom of a ship. God knew where he was and sent a storm. David recognized that there was no place that God would not see. “Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee” (Psalm 139:12). God sees all, even in the darkness.

Psalm 139:13-18: (God is omnificent: God created all things and is unlimited in His creative power.) God created David. “My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth” (Psalm 139:15). David understood that he was “curiously wrought”. This means “embroidered.” God intricately makes each person. Remember what God told Jeremiah: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). God revealed to Jeremiah that He knew him and had a plan for Jeremiah; even before he was born.

Psalm 139:19-22: (God is omnipotent: God has unlimited authority and influence over all.) David chose to hate the wickedness of sin, just as God does, counting sin as his own enemy (see Psalm 139:19-22). David had a righteous anger toward sin. “21. Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? 22. I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies” (Psalm 139:21-22). David recognized that there is a “perfect hatred”. Paul also reminds us of this. “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good” (Romans 12:9). Abhor means “to detest with horror.” Believers are to “detest with horror” sin. God has all authority and influence over all, yet He allows each person to choose.

Remember that God knows all. “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13). Also understand that God protects His own. “The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them” (Pslam 34:7). God is with Believers, no matter where they are. Believers are to understand that God has a plan for each life that He desires to see fulfilled. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). Because Believers are re-created (born again), God enables each one to walk, doing the things He now has for Believers to do.

Having learned these things, Believers should make David’s final words in this Psalm our daily prayer. “23. Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24.
